Hi Bloggers, 333 is done, dusted and complete...
On Saturday I looked at the weather forecast for Sunday, the last day of Challenge333, and I decided to do about 10km so that we could avaoid 3 loops totalling 23k for UB if the weather was as bad as predicted. Now I don't see myself as in anyway clever but this was a VERY bright move! I did 9km on Saturday and on Sunday it was cold, it was wet and it was going to be muddy and hilly!
The turn out on Sunday was amazing, 32 brave souls arrived on Sunday morning at Goldenstones Leisure Centre in Yeovil. What a club, 30 years old, a great cake made by Stacey, loads of cake from others and just 3 loops planned in the gales and the rain. Iain Clarke from Action Ducheene arrived from London, Ian and Ali had come down from Hindhead in Surrey.
We set of with a nice message from Tony and Jen, Alfie and Arthurs parents in my mind, loop 1, no problem, muddy, raining but not to windy, Kris, my daughter, does not know YTRRC runs to well and turned up without off-roaders, she will learn!! Big puddles, big mud but not too many hills. And I forgot to take gloves, now there are cold hands and cold hands, and mine were frozen..
Back to Goldenstones, it was hard setting off on loop 2, now we hit the hills as well as the mud, the rain got heavier, and worst of all, the cold wind got stronger. Matt went flying, as did Dave, all ok I'm glad to say. Roads were like rivers, paths like streams, the mud was slippery and it was cold, but still on we went. I started to pass the word on my wisdom in doing 9km the day before as we went past the 22km mark for me, I had 1km to meet my target distance. NO NEED FOR LOOP 3, Everyone stopped at 14km (when I went through 333km) and gave me a well done, 30 years well and truly celebrated and awareness of DMD improved just a bit.
It would have taken great mental fortitude to go out for a 3rd loop, so Saturday was such a great decision, but I know that all those great people out with me would have done it if necessary.
I have been truly humbled by the experience of running with such fantastic people, I am not going to name everyone, you know who you are, but a few who do need a mention, Ian Mayhew, the inspiration who continues to raise awareness through Challenge639 and who is starting to get back to the fitness levels he expects of himself, to everyone at Yeovil Town Road Running Club, there cannot be a better club, especially Sally, Paul and Richard, whose support has been outstanding and constant, to Jen and Kris who joined me for so many miles. And Phil and Pete, always in the background, setting things up and doing the donkey work, thanks everyone!
And finally, a call from Tony Marchant at the end, it meant so much, but typical me, I did not know what to say, I just hope we meet soon, I would love to meet the family, Tony, Jenn, Alfie and Arthur. You all have my respect!
So for one last time... For Alfie and Arthur...
Richard now takes on the Three Race Challenge, Ian continues Challenge639. It is not over for Alfie and Arthur, please talk about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, lets make everyone aware.

Almost there...
Greetings Bloggers, so the end is nigh, it has been a special few days...
Y E O V I L T O W N R O A D R U N N I N done, 'g Club' to go. A few special moments, Saturday I met up with the inspiration behind Challenge333, son of Challenge639, Ian and, along with Daughter Kris, we set of on a little jaunt around The Devils Punch Bowl. Now those who know Ian will be aware that he does not do flat or dry, so it was nine miles of mud, hills, puddles and fantastic views, good company, great sites in a fantastic location. Thanks to Ian and Ali for a recce that created a superb and challenging run.
Then a mad rush to Mums for a celebration of her 80th Birthday before, on Sunday, a family run of 9k with Jen, Kris, Jess, Becky, Alice, Robert and me, some running for the first time for a long time. It was great, tremendous from everyone, I loved it! Then back to Mums for the party left overs, a special weekend. And we talked about Duchennes and Alfie and Arthur, and more people become aware, and they wanted to help.....
Then came early Monday morning, the rain fell, the wind blew, the sea was rough, it was cold, I had to do 14km. Once out I enjoyed it, but then mangaged to screw up the route planning and ended up doing 15.5km..
Been in touch with Iain from Action Duchenne, he will be there Sunday, Debs has come up with three loops for Sunday, one for each decade of the Club, Sally and Paul will be manning the Gazebo and watching the cakes. Its going to be a special day from Goldenstones Leisure Centre in Yeovil at 10am on Sunday, be there! Celebrate 30 great years of Yeovil Town RRC!
Thanks to everyone for all the support, lots of parts hurt, but they are still working and will get better, we have the choice to run, lets take it.
And Richard Dodge is picking up the mantle in July, details to follow!

Over 250km, the end is nigh but not for DMD
Hi Bloggers, after 9 days and 170km without a break I am not running today, moving my rest day to help celebrate my Mums 80th Birthday!!! I have to say my body needs the break, having never done these sort of cumaltive distances before. I have respect for Ian, Craig and other who do ultra stuff on a regular basis.
It would be easier to say what does not ache, hurt, throb or feel weak, but it has been, so far, an amazing experience, finding out that those days when you did go out for that training run because of this, that or the other was usually just an excuse because you did not feel like it! You still have the choice and apart from yesterday, which was a hard slog, every day has been rewarding in some way or another. Great sun rises, great people, great views, amazing places you only see from your own two feet....
So 251km gone, Saturday with Ian and Kris, my daughter, for a little jaunt around the Devils Punch Bowl, Ian = Hills, Mud, Tough, Interesting, Rewarding, bring it on!!, Next Tuesday Craig (running colleague at work who has given me good advice and support) has invited me to join Dorset Doddlers on their pub run (As long as its not the Stickler course Craig!!!).
Then comes Sunday 29th, 10am the last day at
Goldenstones Pools & Leisure Centre
Brunswick Street
Yeovil
Somerset
BA20 1QZ
United Kingdom
Telephone: 01935 845888
Be there to run or just meet everyone, 3 distances, 5ish, 8ish and the full 23k (14+miles). There will be guests there and I hope a bit of a party atmosphere. Come along, there will be some cakes and information and a few smiles. If you just want to be there are the end, we should finish abetween 12 and 12:15!

Getting Ahead Of My Self
First tonight, hats off and well done to Ian, Challenge 639 takes another step as Ian completes a 40 mile trail around Coventry. Respect mate, well done, glad you enjoyed the Cup Cakes!
So what about me, I have just completed 110km (68ish miles) in a week, that for me is a very long way. I have been to some lovely places and seen some beautiful sunrises. The Basingstoke Canal Path (I feel a challenge there, it is a 32 mile path), Boscombe Cliff Top looking over Hengisbury Head, Chewten Bunny, Highcliffe Castle, The Water Meadows...
Then I realised I have a problem this week, West Country for two days, Mums 80th Birthday, Then Kent, etc so I was worried time might be an issue in week 3. So I challenged myself to get two days ahead...
O, A and D along the canal on Saturday, and 18k today, including a lovely run around Stanpit Marsh. I now have some aches and pains, but I can still run, nice choice to have. So I made it, and I am pleased, I challenged myself, and got there, that is always rewarding!
Getting the runs in means early starts, one morning this week was frosty, I was on a long one. Over a bridge before sun up, it was like an ice rink, I went down like a sack of spuds straight on to my knee. Lucky I had tights on, but they were new, but they were more shredded than my knee!!! But is is sore, my ankle ligaments have been better and my back after the fall, well we won't go there, good old Ibuprofen!
I have now have a bit of breathing space, and am looking forward to the rest of the challenge. The 29th of April looks good, details on previous post. I have info from Iain at Action Duchenne, I have had support from everybody at the club. Please be in Yeovil for the last day if you can.
Some confirmed dates, with Dorset Doddlers on the 24th, with Ian for Run with the Devil (I mean one of Ians routes around the Devils Punch Bowl) on 21st. My daughter Kris is coming, be afraid Kris, be very afraid!!. 22nd running in Reigate with some family members and friends and tomorrow night somewhere in the West Country, who knows where???
Thanks everybody for all the support, think of Alfie and Athur, be there on the 29th.

YEOVIL TOWN DONE
Hi Blog Watchers, it seems only a few days ago I went through 100km, know why? It was only a few days ago, now I am through 150km, I hit 160km this morning at the end of a beautiful run around the lanes of Somerset near Castle Cary! Great to have the choice!
YEOVIL TOWN done, I was dreading TOWN, 72km in 4 days, including the Easter Bunny, but now its done and feeling good! It may not be far for you Ultra guys out there, but it is for me! There have been some early starts and I have watched the sun rise in several places, but worth it, although the 23km for W was hard!
Day off tomorrow and just ROAD RUNNING CLUB to go, I have had fantastic support from the club, so what has happened, Easter Monday, cunning plan, 15km, so a little jog round the 5k and a slow canter around the Bunny (The Club 10k). The 5km, on plan, nice little 27mins, good. Then off on the Bunny in the rain, sent daughter further up and I started at the back. 3km plan working well, gentle jog, then I overtook a couple and race mode kicked in and plan went out of the window......
Caught Kris at 9.2 looking at watch every 30 secs, told her to ignore watch and go for it, she did and did a PB under 50mins, and to my surprise I came in at 50mins, to fast..... Great race, great organisation and great support, thank you all!!
Then 23km for W, tough call, only had time for 18.5, up before the Sun, to Boscombe Pier and back to Hengistbury then home, beautiful sunrise, see my Facebook page for pics. Then 5km+ at Cary in the evening and then this morning with rain to start and then beautiful sunrise and bright skys for an enjoyable 14km for N!
And Ian has come up with an 'Ian Run' of 14km on 21st April, for those who don't know Ian, I should be afraid, very afraid, Ian does not do flat, firm surfaces!
Over halway soon, thanks for all your support and reading this!!

100km in, just 225km to go
Greetings Bloggers! Y E O V I L T gone, another 20km, (20.75km actually) for 'T' in the bag, now this was a beautiful run. Across the Stour water meadows, climb to the top of Hengistbury Head, magnificent views across Christchurch Harbour, to the Isle of Wight and out across the Solent and the Channel, then along the sea front, and up one of the infamous Bournemouth zig zag paths. Went past 100km at the top of the Head.
Ian (www.gearsandtears.com, click on C639) completed the latest stage of his Challenge 639, a good steady run around the beautiful Compton 20, details on the web site!
So where do we go from here... Tomorrow at the Bunny, the famous Yeovil Town RRC 10k, one of the fastest around and the ideal place for a PB. I will be doing the 5k route followed by the 10k race, one thing is for sure, no PB for me, that deals with the 'O' in Town!!! Sales meeting on Tuesday, so 15k before I leave for Bromsgrove and 8k when I get back to Castle Cary, 23k for the 'W'. Wednesday morning 9k of the 14k for the 'N' in Town, then 5k at the Yeovilton race in the evening!
I will be joining Dorset Doddlers for one of their pub runs at some stage, really looking forward to that, date and distance to follow.
Other firm dates
I will be joining Ian, along with my Daughter Kris, for a little 14km jog around the Devils Punchbowl on Saturday 21st, then a special day, I will be joining my Nieces, Rebecca and Jessica, as well as Jen and Kris, for a gentle 9k on Sunday 22nd. A family affair!
ROAD dates to follow.. Enjoy your choices, enjoy doing what you choose to do, and think about Arthur and Alfie, who, as things stand, will not have that choice.

Time to reflect
Excuse me a moment of refelection, just the one...
You know what? I am sitting here about to go and do the next day of C333, thinking what a bad day it has been, and now I am starting to reflect on what this is all about.....
Iain from Action Duchenne has told me of two families in Bournemouth, I hope I will meet them, they have been hit by DMD, it is in so many places.
I think of Alfie and having his calipers put on before he goes to bed, I think of his pain when he walks such a short distance, I think of his future and what it will bring, I think of Arthur, and hope it will be better, but thinking it will probably be similar, I think of their frustration as they grow as people and characters and at the same time grow weaker. I think of their parents, my boy is coming up to 20, more reflection. There must be a way to 'Stop The Wasting', there must be a way to find a solution, we must talk about it, make people aware.
Iain tells me there is hope, progress is being made, a positive. And from now, Challenge333, son of Challenge 639, (www.gearsandtears.com, click challenge 639) is about being positive.
I now feel down, but you know what, my day was not that bad, I can now go and run, I have that choice, and I will enjoy it.
The rest of this blog will be about my experience of this challenge, the different runs, of people getting involved, of another running club inviting me to join them for one of the runs, about the 29th, the last day, when we will have a bit of a run, a lot of smiles and a few laughs, as well as, I am sure, a few cakes.
This challenge is about awareness, but if you are moved to help, please go to www.marchantfamilytrust.org.uk and click on donate, if you want more information about Alfie and Arthur it is there as well. Full information about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is at www.actionduchenne.org.
Thanks for reading, I am now off on one of the shorter runs, just 9k, I will enjoy it. Keep smiling...

Day 4 Complete, progress and action Duchenne
And so 3 more days have gone, a nice 5k from Boscombe Pier, 15k, 7.5k in the morning and a very enjoyable 7.5k with the 4.5mile group at the club on Tuesday making the 15k for the 'O' in Yeovil. Thanks to all my running partners on Tuesday, I loved it, the company was very special!
Today was tough, 22k needed, busy day so had to be done early. Alarm at 5:20am, up ready to go at 6, Garmin does not work, I was not happy.... 6:10am and on the road, had to estimate, pictures on my Facebook page. 8 miles, out and back along Bournemouth sea front, it was cold down there, ended up doing 23k, 1k extra!! New Garmin ordered on next day delivery, here tomorrow!
Two more days, 9km and 12km. Friday I will be doing the last 4 km of 12km at the track session at Yeovil Arena at 6:30pm, and then we are into TOWN, T = 20km, O = 15km, W = 23k, N = 14k
T is Easter Sunday, 20k from Christchurch, starting 8am, Hengistbury Head, a beach run and across the local salt marshes, a nice run, let me know if you want to join me.

Just 308km To Go - Day One Complete
Hi All
A special hello to all my 14 running colleagues today, Ian, Becky, Jen, Pete, Phil, Jac, Debs, Debs, Paul, Sally, Chris, Richard, Kris, Harry, thank you all for your great company, for driving here and taking part and showing support for Alfie and Arthur, we had the choice of running, nice choice to have!
The day started with me feeling every niggle and worrying about injury, feeling nervous, setting out the cakes, and hoping day 1 would go well. Then I thought I did not have to put my son to bed with callipers on his legs last night, whats a few niggles?!
Becky and then Ian were first to arrive, followed by my daughter Kris, then Harry and then the guys from Yeovil, what a great turn out, we had 15 willing runners setting off for the Forest in perfect sunshine, there were some who had not run for a long time and several who had NEVER attempted this sort of distance.
So this was the Y in Yeovil, 25k in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, the special New Forest, we reached the gate into the Forest at 8k, 3 left us at this point, a great run from 3 special people for whom 25k would have been too far, (4 Weeks to train for the last leg of 23k guys!!!).
Then into the Forest, Ian stripped of one of his layers, down to six layers I think, it must have been warm!! (3 down to 2 really). The Forest was beautiful but dry, avoiding the ponies and along a footpath through the trees, several miles later out into the open acres of heathland, stunning views with a distant site of the only serious hill on the way to Burley, a nice 'slope' with loose stones and grit just to make it a little more challenging, I think Phil said 'I thought it was Blo*dy flat round here' or words of a similar nature. Everyone made it up, and Burley was close and we were 19k in, only 6k to go, well thats what I told them!!
Into Burley, beautiful, past the Cider Company and back into the Forest, a lovely sandy path across acres of Heathland, rumour has it Ian stripped off another layer, but its only a rumour! Phil was on a mission, he was flying and leading the way, a nice stop at the big lake near Burley and we were on the way home.
Deb had been told, 'come along, we are doing a little 5 miles, we were now at 13.1 but she was going great, as was Kris whose longest previous was 10 miles! A long straight road through the heathland leading back towards home. Paul had pulled a muscle and was really trying to keep going. I told him I need him on 29th and don't be silly and sent for a pickup, he did a great time for his 13.1 and was gutted to pull out, but sensible. We STOPPED anyone else getting in the car and set off for the last bit back home.
Now I had said 25k, and when we went through 26k I did get some interesting looks, but 26.5k and we were home, Ian was now just in shorts (Only Joking), Deb was leading the way, Sally was flying, big distance, magic performance, Jac was going great guns, I had a Blister, Pete looked like he had just set off, and Phil wanted to go round again and I was just proud of my girl!! There were supporters to greet us, a special moment.
And then the cakes, and what cakes, Debbie, those flapjacks are to die for, and as for the fruit cake MMMMMmmmmmmm... Sally, that sponge was amazing. Bev brought some amazing strawberry fruit scones, Ian laid on the floor and asked to be fed (He did do about 40 miles this weekend), Phil wanted tea, tea and more tea, Chris wanted Sausage Rolls, Richard took pictures.
In summary, Ian thanks for the inspiration and joining us today, I confirm Yeovil Town Road Running Club is very special and I would not want to run for anyone else, The New Forest is beautiful, you are all very special people and I had a wonderful day and have only 308km to go.
